FROM THE MOUNTAINS OF GREECE TO THE REST OF THE WORLD

In Samarina, Greece, Vlach shepherds originally raised both goats and sheep for milk, but they soon began to realize how good the sheep’s wool was for protection against the cold, freezing winters.

Around 500 A.D., the shepherds started making blankets out of this wool, and legend has it, that one of them left his blanket in the Pindus Mountains for two days, where it got soaked by a stream of water, ending up with a felted back, and appearing soft and fluffy at the top.

This discovery triggered the manufacturing of wool rugs, blankets, bedding and clothes throughout Greece, and as travelers journeyed to Greece, they took them back to their own countries, and by the 20th century, Flokati rugs had started to make their way into American homes, as well as the rest of the world.
